Acquiring Knowledge of God…
Recently I have really have had this urge to re read “A Knowledge of the Holy” by A.W. Tozer. Not only am I re reading it, I am taking notes on it. In essence, I am almost rewriting the book. The first chapter, “Why We Must Think Rightly About God” is about why mankind must have a right opinion of God. He points out that no civilization has never risen above it’s concept of God. The God they serve shapes the kind of people they are. Looking at history from what I’ve studied I find that to be very true.
Take the Greeks for instance, their “gods” were like them. They had like passions and were decietful and the husbands were unfaithful to their wives and all sorts of things. The Romans had the same religious system that the Greeks had. Both of those societies drowned themselves in drunken orgies and found themselves dead in no time. When Christianity became the “official” religion of the Roman Empire, we found that God was a tyrant. He really wasn’t a tyrant, but the people who represented him were. So, the people concluded that God was a tyrant.
I usually find that those who view God as “one of the boys” will live like God really is. Whether it be the truth or not. Those who view God as impatient will act really harshly and impatient with the people around them. Those who view God as a lawmaker will live like a legalist. Those who view God as God is love will just love everyone around them and welcome everyone with open arms and…. just love.
I find that the best, most accurate, and biblical way to view God is the Bridegroom, King and Judge. He is the Glad Bridegroom who rejoices over his bride. But he is also the King of the universe, he still holds the earth in his hand and it’s nothing but a grain of sand (maybe smaller) in his eyes. He is also the Judge of all the Earth who does not tolerate compromise and hates sin with a passion. He is the glad bridegroom who loves you but he is also the God who, out of his love for a pure and spotless bride will send people to hell for having no sacrifice for their sins.
With this view, there is an uncompromising view of how God works. But, not only does it show how God works, but it shows how we must work as well. We are to be the Bride that is ravished by our bridegroom. But we are to rule and reign with in hin eternity, we are to discern and have all spiritual wisdom. We are to be as wise as serpents but as harmless as a dove. We are to judge compromise and sin within ourselves and deal with it accordingly. Whether someone else is doing it is not our responsibility. We are not to associate with believers who live in sin. We are to be led by the spirit at all times.
This is not easy to do at first but I am assured by those who have experience that only by doing this will it become easy. The best way to learn it is to do it. Kinda like flying. Kinda like walking and other things. I so need grace to do this everyday.
